Treating VWD

If you have been diagnosed with von Willebrand Disease (VWD), either the von Willebrand factor (VWF) in your blood does not work properly, or there is not enough of it. To treat this condition, you need to replace the VWF that is missing or ineffective. Learn about the treatment options available to you:

Stimate® (desmopressin acetate) Nasal Spray. Stimate® Nasal Spray is a synthetic copy of a natural hormone, which helps the body release more VWF into the bloodstream. It is for people with mild to moderate type 1 VWD. Because it’s a nasal spray, it can be easier to use than an injectable treatment. Learn more.

DDAVP® (desmopressin acetate). DDAVP is a well-known form of desmopressin acetate that comes in an injectable form.

VWF Replacement Therapy. Also known as VWF concentrates, these injectable medicines replace the missing or ineffective VWF in the blood. This type of treatment is most effective in:

  • People who can’t use desmopressin acetate or who need prolonged treatment
  • People with type 1 VWD who are not responsive to desmopressin acetate
  • People with type 2 VWD
  • People with type 3 VWD

Humate-P® is a VWF replacement therapy that may be an option for some patients. Humate-P® can be used in all types of VWD for the treatment of bleeding episodes and the prevention of bleeding during and after all surgical procedures. If you feel that Stimate® Nasal Spray or other treatments do not adequately control your bleeding; if you have types 2 or 3 VWD; or if you have severe type 1 VWD, Humate-P® may be the right option for you.
